The Great Downsize, Part 2: The Decline of American Jewish Organizations
Steven Windmueller, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of Jewish Communal Studies
In a follow-up to his previous blog in the Times of Israel, Dr. Windmueller dives further into “The great downsize,” which has been documented since the 1990’s, and reflects the undoing of civic and religious engagement but raises a broader challenge to American democracy itself. Previously he explored the financial challenges, now Windmueller examines the declining membership numbers. He looks at trends that impact the health and vitality of the civic, religious, and communal sector and argues that such downsizing profoundly impacts the quality, vitality and health of America’s sense of the common good, as fewer individuals are bound together around shared activities and common purpose toward preserving democratic institutions, civic values and religious communalism.
